Apple Maps is crucial to future innovation, from autonomous automobiles to AR experiences, so it is noteworthy that Apple’s personal Indoor Mapping Knowledge Format (IMDF) has been adopted as a group customary for indoor positioning companies.

What’s IMDF?

IMDF has been accepted as a group customary by the Open Geospatial Consortium in response to proposals from a cross-industry group that features Apple, Google, Autodesk, and Ordnance Survey.

It allows a venue, group or {industry} to create totally custom-made indoor maps utilizing industry-standard instruments. The maps use current Wi-Fi networks to allow GPS-level location accuracy so guests can navigate inside areas utilizing their gadget.

Scott Simmons, chief requirements officer on the Open Geospatial Consortium, had this to say:

“With IMDF now a part of the OGC Requirements Baseline, we look ahead to deeper integration with different geospatial Requirements to deal with location wants in every single place.”

Apple developed IMDF to offer indoor maps for venues, so Apple Maps customers have a neater time navigating areas. The corporate says it “provides a mobile-friendly, compact, human-readable, and extremely extensible information mannequin for any indoor area, offering a foundation for orientation, navigation, and discovery.”

That integration between requirements is known as important to the evolution of autonomous machines.
